Book Review: NetSuite for Consultants by Peter Ries

Published on January 9, 2022.

Over the holidays, I had the opportunity to read a new book on NetSuite. That's right - a new book on NetSuite! Unfortunately, there aren't very many books available that cover NetSuite (although I do list a few at the end of this post). So for someone like myself, who still enjoys reading books, news of a new NetSuite book is a cause for celebration.

The book, written by Peter Ries, is NetSuite for Consultants: A Handbook for ERP and CRM Consultants to Implement NetSuite 2021 Quickly and Easily.

If you're looking for a minimalist review of the book, here goes: It's very well done, and I highly recommend it.

About The Author

Peter Ries has been working as a Consulting Technical Director at NetSuite for nearly 10 years, and holds the NetSuite SuiteCloud Developer I and II certifications. You can find him on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/peterries/

The Content

Peter provides very clear explanations and descriptions of a large number of NetSuite topics, including the ecosystem itself, implementation strategies and methods, pre-implementation tasks, customization options, item types, transaction types, and much, much more.

Here's a list of topics that are covered:
• Introduction to the NetSuite Ecosystem, Platform, and Related Features
• Selecting and Applying an Implementation Methodology
• Creating a Project Plan
• Documenting the Organization's Requirements
• Analyzing the Organizations Users and Roles
• Understanding the Organization's Accounting and Finance
• Getting to Know the Organization's Customers, Other Entities, and Items
• Identifying the Organization's Main Transactions
• Custom Forms, Records, and Fields
• Centers and Dashboards
• Items and Related Lists
• Customers, Vendors, Contacts and Other Entities
• Financial Transactions and Period Closes
• Procure-to-Pay Transactions
• Order-to-Cash Transactions
• Other Transactions and Custom Transactions
• Analytics, Reports, and Data Exports
• Managing Gaps and Creating Custom Automations
• Managing Integrations
• Managing Data Migrations

You'll also find nice summaries of things such as SuiteApps, an overview of NetSuite integration technologies and options, NetSuite account types, and more.

While Peter doesn't cover NetSuite development topics in depth, I do think that developers - and especially new developers who are trying to get familiar with the NetSuite platform - will find this book to be helpful.

My Recommendation

The book's main goal is to address the needs of those who are involved in implementing NetSuite, whether as a NetSuite professional or as a NetSuite user. I think it does that, and more.

With this book, Peter has managed to provide a "crash course" in NetSuite. And while the book's focus is on implementation, I believe that anyone who is involved with NetSuite - either as a consultant, user, administrator, or someone who is in the process of evaluating NetSuite - is going to find a lot of valuable information in it.

NetSuite for Consultants is available from Amazon as a Kindle book for $35.99 USD, or as a paperback for $49.99 USD.
