FileMaker Server 13: How to Install An SSL Certificate

This past week, I installed an SSL Certificate on a FileMaker Server 13 server that is running on a Windows Server 2012-based Amazon EC2 instance. What made this challenging was that the server uses a subdomain, and I wanted to order the certificate through my Web hosting provider (MediaTemple).

The real challenge was that by ordering the certificate through MediaTemple, I ended up bypassing the normal process that you would go through to generate a certificate request using FileMaker Server (and specifically the "fmsadmin certificate create" command).

What follows are the steps that I took to order the certificate and install it.

  1. Generated the certificate using MediaTemple. Note that the certificate is actually a "QuickSSL certificate" issued by GeoTrust.
  2. Downloaded the certificate information from Media Temple as a zip file.
  3. Copied the certificate request file ( "some.subdomain.csr" ) to: C:\Program Files\FileMaker\FileMaker Server\CStore\
  4. Renamed the certificate request file ( "some.subdomain.csr" ) to: serverRequest.pem
  5. Copied the encrypted private key file ( "some.subdomain.key" ) to: C:\Program Files\FileMaker\FileMaker Server\CStore\
  6. Renamed the encrypted private key file ( "some.subdomain.key" ) to: serverKey.pem
  7. Copied the certificate file ( "some.subdomain.crt" ) to: C:\Program Files\FileMaker\FileMaker Server\CStore\
  8. Opened a DOS ("PowerShell") window.
  9. Ran this: fmsadmin certificate import "C:\Program Files\FileMaker\FileMaker Server\CStore\some.subdomain.crt"

Hopefully this will be helpful to others as well.
